MC Chickaboo, the award winning UK’s number one female MC takes time out from promoting her massive new singles with The Str8jackets, “Move & Rock” to chat to us. Known for her huge collaborations with Timo Maas and Rennie Pilgrem, Chickaboo is now heading for an insane urban dance, hip-hop hybrid sound that is already causing havoc in the clubs and on the blogs due to the killer new single Move & Rock which is effortlessly crossing genres and smashing up all clubs from the legendary Space Terrace in Ibiza to the UK Funky floors of Twice As Nice and is already building into THE summer anthem!. (Full Biography)

1.	You have worked with an impressive selection of producers. How do you find them all and how did you meet up with Timo Maas, Rennie Pilgrem and now The Str8jackets?

They find me! I’m very lucky and have been around long enough that people know who I am and wanna work with me. It mostly happens by introductions by people who know us.

2.	How did you get your name?

From my sisters doll, she had a doll that sucked it’s thumb called “Cheekaboo” when 1st I started I had gigs but no MC name and so had to come up with one pretty quick. I wanted a name that was obviously a girls name, an so changed the “cheek” to “Chick” so no guys could rip me off . There were NO girls about at the time MC’ing.

3.	Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

Lol! I’ve been given various piercings removed from various places, In the US I’ve been given about a million ‘raver bracelets’ I’ve been offered sexual favours but don’t think that counts as a ‘gift’

4.	What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had on the mic?

Weirdest..Hard to remember but I’ve had a bomb scare in a club and had to announce ‘could people please calmly make their way to the exits’ I’ve also proposed on behalf of a shy guy too, she said yes!

5.	What are you working on at the moment?

I’m workin with so many different styles of music right now, I’m having so much fun. It also challenges me to think of different melodies. Im currently workin on lots of new tracks. Some secret others not so…

6.	Where do you get your inspiration for your lyrics? Specifically “Move & Rock”.

Inspiration happens in an instant so it’s hard to pin down what it is. Sometimes someone can say something to you that strikes a chord. With dance music I write about the music, dancing an feelings an experiences that happen in a clubbing situation. Or sex!

7.	What do you do in your time off?

Time off is taken up with watching comedy TV or stand-ups (I like to laugh a lot) taking photos and relaxing. I travel most weekends so its nice to chill alone with some rum.

8.	What would be your ultimate holiday?

Thai island beach, warm sea, nice food and sunshine/Back 2 Life in Antigua is Jazzie B’s week long Caribbean excursion is my second bestest holiday/musical holiday

9.	What would you say is your best trait?

I think my sense of humour isn’t too bad…

10.	Where is the best destination for dance music?

I couldn’t tell u factually but I think London and the UK is still the worlds capital and most varied place in the world for music/clubbing

11.	Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

Things always go wrong, it’s the way of the world. The trick is to pretend that its all running smoothly so peeps don’t notice. Put on a show an that’s what peeps remember, not the problems (hopefully)

12.	Who do you follow in the World Cup (apart from your home country)?

I support the underdog, always! Tho I like Ivory Coast’s chances, and I defo do not want Portugal to win. Ronaldo has a punchable face!

13.	What can we expect from you this summer season?

This summer will be sexy tunes, Str8jackets an Rennie Pilgrem an I have got some more tracks coming. DJ Flore’s album that I’m also on is dropping soon too. I like to feel da summer groove and get that out in my vocals.

14.	Where do you see dance music going the next year?

Erm? Well its getting back out there with the chart takeover from Dizzee etc, people always wanna dance an release stress so I think it will never die out. Just morph and grow into some other style for the kids to follow.

15.	Tune of 2010 & most influential artist of 2010 so far?

Best tune: I honestly don’t have one, tho Im looking forward to Quentin Harris’s and Osunlade’s new albums coming out. I like those guys!

16.	Twitter or Facebook?

Twitter for the humour, Facebook for the sometimes useful contacts that can find you on it. The ol school friends finding you is alittle alarming at times.

17.	What’s your favourite gadget?

My I-Pod touch, love it!!

18.	What is your most prized posession?

My home, It took ages to find it and its my own lil piece of paradise in London.

19.	Favourite gig you have ever played?

I don’t have a favourite as there’s too many amazing moments. Southport Weekender having Angie Stone tell me I did well. MC’ing for Afrika Bambaataa, The O2 with Soul2Soul supporting Alicia Keys, RBMA wid Jazzie B, Dreamscape 5 w the late G.E. Real, supporting Cypress Hill, loads I can’t get my head round right now…

20.	Who are the best artists you’ve ever played with?

See above..too many (and im kinda done wid typing now) sorry!

21.	Cats or Dogs?

I prefer dogs but now have a lil kitten called Lil Dave so I like both, I think!

22.	What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

Too many tunes but some tracks by these artists are in my ‘shower tunes’ playlist: The Str8jackets, Creative Source, Roy Ayers, Frankie Knuckles, Digital, Micheal Jackson, Alexander O’Neal, DJ Flore and Osunlade

The Str8jackets take time out from promoting their hotly anticipated new single with MC Chickaboo, “Move & Rock” (due for full release 2nd August) to chat to us at Big In Ibiza HQ. Made up of London based trio Mark Robinson (Peppermint Jam UK), Dave Longmore and Phil Fearon, The Str8jackets had their first major recognition courtesy of Pete Tong, playing their bootleg remix of the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘Boom Boom Pow’ and then spinning their ‘Whats it All About?’ record twice on the Essential Selection. (Full Biography).

1.	Do you guys really need Str8jackets? How insane are you?

We have the Str8jackets! We had to order them in especially from some crazy American website. (Dave) Mark had it bookmarked for some reason!
The craziest time is in the studio, as we like to say ‘It’s a sickness…’

2.	Have you ever been physically restrained?

(Mark) My Mrs seemed to enjoy ‘Testing’ the Str8jacket on me and legging it!

3.	You have worked with an impressive selection of vocalists. How do you find them all?

(Dave) Its just a case of having the right material, and the right connections.
(Mark) It really is great to work with such talented singers and writers. The best part is the recording sessions where we often just stand back in amazement at the quality of vocals.

4.	How did you meet up with MC Chickaboo?

Boo was introduced to our camp a couple of years ago by our good friend DJ Femi B. Of course after her work with Timo Maas and Rennie Pilgrem it was fantastic to get such a great vocal to work with…

5.	Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

Rumour has it Phil has knickers thrown at him on stage quite often…

6.	What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

(Mark) I don’t know if I’d call it weird but for me I’d say it when I played in a remote town in India called Pune. The club was quite intimate but due to the heat they had loads of Air Conditioning units dotted around the ceiling. I was playing my set and really enjoying it when I started to get a weird feeling every time I touched the mixer… I looked around the booth and found the Air Conditioning unit above my head was leaking and the power supply for the decks was sitting in a puddle of water!!! Thank God for my rubber flip flops!!!
(Dave) For me, it’s got to be playing a club in Barbados called The Ship Inn. I got to the decks, played one track, then all hell broke loose! The biggest brawl the club had ever seen! The stage started to move, and I was hanging on to the decks for dear life! The club got shut down for the night, quickest buck I ever made.

7.	What are you working on at the moment?

We’ve been soooo busy! We’ve just put the finishing touches to collaborations with US Diva DAWN TALLMAN, Hip House Legend TYREE COOPER, 2 tracks with the Awesome KATHERINE ELLIS, a new project with the super soulful GARY BARDOUILLE along with new versions of ‘Call it Fate’ by Richie Dan and ‘Belfast Kiss’ by our good buddy Jay Kay. Also keep an eye out for a sneaky bootleg called ‘When?’ and of course our second single with Chickaboo!!!

8.	How did all three of you meet?

I met the guys a couple of years back when I started managing Dave and Femi (Leggz & Femi B)… From there I started to get in the studio and the Str8jackets was formed!!!

9.	What do you do in your time off?

Time off? What’s that??? As I said before It’s a Sickness!

10.	What would be your ultimate holiday?

(Mark) Me and the Mrs on a Beach in Mauritius…
(Dave) Me and some one elses…… no, er, I mean circumnavigating the globe, stopping of every now and again, getting out the lappy, and producing a track……..ahhhh, to dream……..

11.	What would you say is your best trait?

(Mark) For me its definitely determination. I’m probably getting a bit annoying always nagging labels and DJ’s to get behind our music!
(Dave) I’d say the same, without it, you’ll get nowhere in this business!

12.	Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

It’s really become a focal point for developing not just music but also yourself as a production outfit and DJ. If your music is being played there you are definitely on the right track and DJing there is second to none.

13.	Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

Of course not (cough, cough ,splutter)

14.	Who do you follow in the World Cup (apart from your home country)?

(Mark) No-one in particular, however I love an underdog so will usually root for the minnows. And I got New Zealand and Mexico in a sweep so come on!!!
(Dave) Brrrraaaaaazil!

15.	What can we expect from you this summer season?

Plenty of new music along with lots more DJ gigs. A live show, with all the artistes we work with, is definitely on the agenda, but it’ll take a fare bit of planning!

16.	Where do you see dance music going the next year?

The quirky sample based stuff seems to be making a comeback with Gramaphonedzie and Yolanda Be Cool breaking through with mad samples… Also the American mainstream is starting to take notice of dance music at last with David Guetta bringing the big acts in for collaborations…

17.	Tune of 2010 & most influential artist of 2010 so far?

For me I’d say ‘One’ by the Swedish House Mafia simply due to it sounding so huge… In terms of influential artists for me its probably Chocolate Puma so far this year… I love their sound and they seem to always do something fresh while keeping the energy for peaktime club play.

18.	Twitter or Facebook?

Facebook for us – But we’re new to Twitter so who knows…

19.	What’s your favourite bit of kit?

In the studio I’d say the APC controller for Ableton as it really speeds things up in pre production… In the booth its gotta be the Pioneer EFX1000… Hours of Fun!!!

20.	What is your most prized posession?

Probably my 15,000 Records (which is odd as I haven’t played a record in years…)

21.	Favourite gig you have ever played?

That’s a toughie… Pacha Sharm El Shiekh and Attica Singapore are without doubt top 3 but the best ever has to be the ‘We Love’ Beach party at Oceans 27 in Bali… 5000 People on a beach going crazy… Amazing!

22.	Cats or Dogs?

Both! Dave has a Husky/Akita cross called Mega while I have 2 Burmese Cats called Thelma & Louise!

23.	What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

ATFC is on track with ‘Its Over’, Riva Star is on fire with mixes on everything, Mark Knight’s new ‘Devil Walking’ track is huge, HCCR ‘Here comes that Sound’ is massive too…

www.thestr8jackets.com

Download The Str8jackets ft MC Chickaboo – Move & Rock

MC Chickaboo, the award winning UK’s number one female MC teams up with The Str8jackets following
collaborations with Timo Maas and Rennie Pilgrem for an insane Urban Dance, hip-hop hybrid sound that is
already causing havoc in the clubs and on the blogs due to the killer new single “Move & Rock”. Effortlessly
crossing genres “Move & Rock” is smashing up all clubs from the legendary Space Terrace in Ibiza to the
UK Funky floors of Twice As Nice and is already building into THE summer anthem!

The Brothers Grin aka The Grin DJs, James Edwards and Mark Batch take time out of the studio to chat to Big In Ibiza following their exclusive DJ Mix for the third Big In Ibiza Podcast which went out this week.

The pair promote some of London’s most popular dance events including Southcity and Grin Recordings which spawned an electro house label of the same name and DJ at some of the coolest club nights around the world and recently rocked the house at Big In Ibiza’s biggest event to date, February Flex at The White House.

Mark Batch

Mark Batch embarked on his musical journey during college where he started promoting a night showcasing everything from old skool to drum ‘n’ bass, garage, hip-hop and jungle, booking acts like Adam F. After spending his student loan on a pair of Technics Mark was fully hooked, and was soon DJing alongside legends such as The Scratch Perverts, The Dream Team and Nicky Blackmarket with his style of uplifting, feel good electronic house and electro with occasional dark twists seeing him become a firm crowd favourite wherever he plays as can be heard in his huge electro anthem Jack Michaels & Mark Batch – R.I.D. on Big In Ibiza.

After rocking Ibiza this summer with Ibiza heat and Grin Recordings, James Edwards returned to London with sets at The Gallery @ Ministry of Sound, Fabric & the SW4 After Party with Eric Prydz. If this wasn’t enough his track ‘Bed Time Story’ with Natalie Parker hit #23 in the Dance Chart on Swedish based PR Records and has a storming summer ahead this year with gigs lined up in London, Sweden Gothenburg, Sydney, Melbourne and Ibiza. Teaming up with Dave Minns (Ministry of Sound / The White House) James Edwards scores his first signing to Big In Ibiza under their So Called Scumbags guise with “The Morning Session” which is shaping up to be a Miami BOMB!

James Edwards

1. What are you working on at the moment?

MB: My production & Logic. I also organize marketing campaigns for Record Labels, Events & Festivals for some really cool brands like SW4, Ministry of Sound and Carl Cox with datatransmission.co.uk
Also outside of the dance scene, I’m helping organizing a big School Reunion to celebrate its 50 Year Anniversary, which I hope goes well.

JE: Spending most of my time working in the studio. Working and collaborating with other producers and live musicians. I love it. Also working on this summers Southcity parties at DEX in Brixton. London’s answer to the Ibiza workers parties. Get stuck in they are awesome. www.southcityuk.com

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

MB: Indie Electro & Nu Rave seem to have done well in 2009. In 2010 artists like Sub Focus, Chase & Status and Deadmau5 are mashing up some brilliant stuff with their tight production and they are going to be key in bringing Dubstep to the masses in the Dance scene this year. Expect lots of bass wobbling LFO action.

JE: Well that would depend on who is making it. Big room fast stabs and groove bass lines are what get me going so more of that please.

3. What makes a good DJ?

MB: Someone that can entertain people with their performance, tune selection and bring a good energy and vibe to a party.

JE: The obvious would be great music and skillful mixing. But I Love to see a DJ feeling his/her music on the decks. Going for it like a mad man! Too many DJ’s hide behind DJ booths with a blank face. Some would say this is a “cool DJ persona” and just let the music do the talking. BOLLOCKS! I don’t have time for boring DJ’s, next please!

4. What’s your favourite bit of kit, and how does it sit in your overall set-up?

MB: My MacBook Pro… (She’s called Annie) Im hoping to integrate my DJ sets with my MacBook in someway. I’ve just been sent a VCI 100 by Vestax and am planning to give it a test when I get home. (I’m thinking I might not give it back – it’s really pretty!)

JE: For live DJ’ing, im loving the pioneer EFX 1000. It has an awesome feedback feature on the echo that you can use in so many ways. In the studio I’m getting new plug-ins all the time but recently worked with a tiny little device called the APOGEE ONE. A fantastically crisp portable sound card with built in Mic. It’s tasty 

5. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

MB: My hero at the moment is Moguai, a German that I hope breaks through on the UK scene this year. He’s style gives me a lot of confidence in what I want to do. Tune is ‘Future Shock’ by Rob Peng. (Think Breaky, Old School vibe, Dirty & Pumping.

JE: My Favorite producer of 2009 was defiantly David Penn. Everything he touched was brilliant. His sound defiantly inspired me and made me want to make music! Favorite tune of the year would have to be Erick Morillo – I Get Lifted (Richard Grey RMX)

Mark Batch

6. What can we expect from you in the future?

MB: I’m planning to become a hermit this year as much as possible and spend time focusing on Production. Hopefully by next year I will have a nice Library of tunes that I am fully happy with.

JE: The future is long, expect everything! But for 2010 the So Called Scumbags have some big releases coming out and some great gigs lined up in Sweden, Australia and Ibiza.

7. How did you get into DJing?

MB: I started promoting nights in the bar at Uni, then spent my Student Loan on a Pair of 1200’s

JE: I started going on family holidays to Ibiza at the age of 14 staying in a little town called Cala Llonga. By my 3rd trip I ventured out to Pacha and saw Erick Morillo turn Pacha into a fantasyland! That was all I needed to make me purchase my first set of belt drive turntables.

8. Favourite gig you have ever played?

MB: It would have to be a Peak Time Set at Inigo last Year in March… I got to play everything that I wanted to play and felt like I was on fire.

JE: Feb 2009. I played 4am in the bar at Ministry Of Sound. We had played twice in the Box before but the atmosphere on this night was electric. Boy George was supposed to headline but he was put under house arrest that day, so we ended up playing until 7am to a packed room. We caught the whole thing on camera. It was incredible! Thanks George.

9. Event of 2009?

MB: The Amsterdam Dance Event and seeing Chase & Status live is what really sold me on these guys. (Actually, come to think of it… I swear remember seeing some members of the Big in Ibiza office at this gig looking rather shifty by the stairs!)

JE: Tiesto in Victoria Park. Surprised me as it’s not my music taste but the stage production blew me away.

10. Twitter or Facebook?

MB: I love Facebook, but you should still join my Twitter as I need more followers to monitor what I’ve just eaten or when I last farted.

JE: Facebook. Call mea twit but I’m not on Twitter……..;-)

James Edwards

11. What is your most prized posession?

MB: Annie My MacBook Pro and my girlfriend… (in no particular order)

JE: My Pioneer CDJ’s. Would be lost without them

12. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

MB: These have always been winners in the last few months
Broken Records – Michaels & Lizzie Curious (James Edwards & Mark Batch Mix)
Dedicated To The People – (Nasty Does Evissa Remix)
Who Wants to be Alone – Tiesto ft Nelly Furtado (Robbie Rivera Mix)
Are We On – Mr Groove & Vergas Ft Jillian (Homeaffairs Mix)
Southcity – Mark Batch & Alf Bamford

JE: Dim Chris – Love Can’t Get You Wrong (Afrojack)
James Edwards & Natalie Parker – Set You Free
Marc Vedo – Liquid Spirit (So Called Scumbags)
Patrick Hagenaar – We Feel The Same (Michael Woods)
So Called Scumbags – The Morning Session

13. Cats or Dogs?

MB: I’m a cat lover – My favourite animal is the Cheetah

JE: I have both and love both so can’t choose……..Dogs

14. What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

MB: Must be at my Birthday a couple of years ago, when I got over excited and lost the use of full vision before my set and had to guess my way around the blurred mixer. (Not a good look at all!)

JE: A girl came into the DJ box and asked me if I was single. I was at the time so I smiled and said yes. She got down on her knees and undid my fly’s. My Smile grew and so did other things! I looked up and she then pored her full whisky and coke down there. My smile faded……so did other things.

15. What do you do in your time off?

MB: Stream Wrestling on the internet. It helps me wind down and have a giggle. This link keeps me sane http://www.dailymotion.com/WrestlingChamp619

JE: Eat, Sleep, Football, Tennis and of course my girlfriend

Mark Batch

16. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

MB: Not really but, if there are any hot young ladies out there that wish to send me their smalls, please feel free.

JE: A bra soaked in Champagne at a student party

17. What would be your ultimate holiday?

MB: Going to Disneyland

JE: To Rent a car and drive across the whole of North Ameria. Finish off in Canada and go skiing.

18. What would you say is your best trait?

MB: Thinking of others before myself!? Either that or I have been told I have a nice little bum

JE: To be able to go over the top but still be in control.

19. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

MB: Yes

JE: Yes, Musically and spiritually

20. Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

MB: Yeah that will happen from time to time, but the key is to look for the positives in each situation

JE: Hell yeah. Working as your own boss is tough. There is no one else to blame. You have good days and bad days. When you have the bad days just try to remember the good ones

His MiMo event has gone from strength to strength, hosting parties this year at The Lightbox, Ministry Of Sound (London), Eden (Ibiza) and My House (Leeds) and are also due to start their 2010 Dubai residency in January!

Since being signed to Big In Ibiza in 2008, Chris MiMo has also continued to produce anthem after anthem receiving support from some of the world’s biggest DJs including Dubfire, Sander Kleinenberg, Erick Morillo and David Guetta as well as remixing for artists including Mauro Picotto, My Digital Enemy and labels such as Cr2 and Seamless.”

With his current release Chris MiMo “Electric Nights” out now we caught up with the man from MiMo for a quick chat!

Audiojelly

1. What are you working on at the moment?

Currently on working on some exciting new projects with my MiMo brand. We’ve got some massive secret warehouse parties coming up in East London, the line-ups for which are going to be massive! Plus we’ve just started a new residency @ The Roof Top Madinat in Dubai. The first event was rammed, so we’re looking to expand on that as the year goes on.

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

For me the music have gone back to it’s original house routes. Its Underground! It’s a much slower BPM over the last year with little bits of vocal coming back in and that’s where I see it continuing down the line.

3. What makes a good DJ?

It’s just the ability to know what the crowd are wanting, and really being able to make the dance floor groove just through the records you play and the vibe you create.

4. What’s your favourite bit of kit, and how does it sit in your overall set-up?

I’m not really a “kit” man, my CDJ’s, my mixer and my ears do all the work!

5. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

I’m really feeling Nima Gorji and Alex Niggamann’s music at the moment!

6. What can we expect from you in the future?

Really going for some exciting underground house productions this year, concentrating on the sort of sound I play and making sure the records I make always rock my dancefloor.

7. How did you get into DJing?

Always loved it, from as far back as I can remember and it just always felt the way for me to go. Which is why I also got into promotion, as it’s something I’m good at and I really enjoy, so why not make it my life.

8. Favourite gig you have ever played?

In the summer of 2007 I had 2 headline sets in The Coco Loco room at Privilege Ibiza. Such an amazing room to play, especially when it’s rammed!

9. Event of 2009?

Its got to our MiMo launch party at The Lightbox in Vauxhall. It was an unbelievable night with the crowd really going for it!

10. Twitter or Facebook?

Defo Facebook!!!

11. What is your most prized possession?

My Chris MiMoooo Cow….Long story, but lets just say the MiMo tent at Bloom Festival in 2008 was a great night out!

12. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

My new release on Big In Ibiza called “Electric Nights” has been really doing some damage on the dancefloor!

13. Cats or Dogs?

Catdog

14. What do you do in your time off?

Chill out with my Girlfriend or sit by a lake and try and catch some fish… Proper partying it up DJ style! lol

15. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

I was given a Banana once! Very strange!

16. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

Defo but it’s not the be all and end all! There are plenty of other amazing clubs in the world!

17. Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

Yeah one of our MiMo parties bac in 2008! The mixer in the club blew up and the club did not have a spare! We had to go and get a mixer from another club which took over an hour!!!!!!

Named as one of Carl Cox’s producers of the year in DJ Mag, Matt Smallwood has established himself as a leading production talent enjoying huge success with over 30 single releases on some of the World’s most prestigious labels including Toolroom Records and CR2.

‘Ali Wilson and Matt Smallwood on TEKELEC, their productions haven’t left my box!’
Carl Cox on his ‘Producers of the Year’.

Now for the first time Matt has made the step to setup his own studio in 2010 and release solo productions after a string of high profile collaboration projects that have earned him support from Carl Cox, Sander Van Doorn, Mark Knight, Pete Tong, Stonebridge, DJ Preach, Judge Jules, Marcus Schossow and many more.

‘It’s absolutely amazing! This is what will save us from the boring, flat, tuneless shit that’s around at the moment!’ StoneBridge on Wilson, Smallwood & Ingram – Perfect Sunrise.

The first track from Matt Smallwood’s new studio is called “Debut” and was quickly snapped up by Big In Ibiza and features now as part of Big Room Tunes 2010, and exclusive and upfront showcase of the hottest tunes coming up this year along with some of last year’s biggest anthems!

1. What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working on remixes for Sonny Wharton, Glitter and the Mad Hatter label with a few more in the pipe-line. I’m in the studio next week with Wilson & Ingram to start our follow up to ‘Koko’ which has just been released on Armada and then I’ll be concentrating on more solo material which I’m really looking forward to!

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

Working for Trackitdown, I get to see on a daily basis certain trends and sounds coming and going which is actually really interesting! We’ve seen a huge influx of this funky disco style house making a bit of a comeback which is pretty cool, things like ‘Duck Sauce’ from van Helden & A-Track. Nothing I could ever play but it definitely looks like that’s going to be a big sound this year!

3. What makes a good DJ?

There are lots of things that make a good DJ, in my opinion. It’s important to be able to adapt your set for different crowds and set times, and these days it’s imperative that you are producing music too. There are so many ‘DJ’s’ out there now that being able to beat-match on 2 CDJ’s is nowhere near enough props to get you anywhere in the industry. I feel with solid production, a professional attitude, rocking performances and a raw passion for what you’re doing are the keys to success.

4. What’s your favourite bit of kit, and how does it sit in your overall set-up?

To be honest I have a very small set up at home so don’t get too excited! I have an iMac (which I absolutely love) that I run Logic on and I have one mother keyboard that I process all my soft synths through. So I’d have to say my iMac, or Macaila as I like to call her!

5. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

I am lucky enough to hear over 8,000 new tracks every week as label manager for Trackitdown so picking one track is extremely difficult for me! Artist wise I would probably say Daniel Portman. His production skills are just amazing and he fuses tough, tribal and techy grooves with uplifting proggy elements, I’m pretty sure I’m yet to hear a dud Portman track! DJ wise Carl Cox. He is just an incredible artist with such passion who excels at what he does time and time again, he is unrivalled in my opinion.

6. What can we expect from you in the future?

‘The Future’ is quite a broad time-scale but this year you can definitely expect lots more tracks, I have releases forth-coming on Cr2 and Spinnin and our follow up to ‘Perfect Sunrise’ called ‘Koko’ is out now on Armada. I’ve got plenty of remixes to be getting on with and there should be lots of exciting gigs all over the World later in the year!

7. How did you get into DJing?

One Christmas my parents bought me an acoustic guitar and my Brother got loads of dance tapes as he had just discovered ‘clubbing’. Staying true to form as children do, and always wanting what the other one had, somehow over the course of a year we had swapped hobbies and I was listening to early house stuff around 1990 and donning hideous track-suits while my brother was busy growing his hair and rocking out in front of the mirror! A few years later my parents got me my first set of decks and I was officially hooked from the age of 16!

8. Favourite gig you have ever played?

This is always a hard question but I would say D-Edge in Sao Paolo, Brazil! I was lucky enough to go on a 2 week tour last year and played 8-9am on a Sunday morning. The venue was just amazing, the light and sound was like nowhere I had ever played before and the crowd were so up for it too, a dream gig for sure and one I’ll always remember.

9. Event of 2009?

I would say Carl Cox at Koko! I never miss Carl when he’s in London and he had Yousef and Nic Fanciulli supporting him that night and it was just rocking from start to finish! It was actually this night that gave myself, Ali Wilson and Tristan Ingram the inspiration for our ‘Koko’ track that has just been released.

10. Twitter or Facebook?

I use Facebook more than Twitter but both have their advantages, I hate it when people send me random stuff though or invite me to their ‘Mob Wars’ game, seriously you have way too much time on your hands!

11. What is your most prized posession?

Well the main hub of my life is Macaila, but on a more sentimental value I would have to say my Silver bracelet that I wear every day. We had a big family holiday in Turkey last year and I spotted a bracelet that was mega expensive and decided that kebab’s and beer would be a better way for me to spend my money. My Mum snuck off and surprised me with it on the last day as a gift and I have worn it every day since. My family are the most important thing in my life and this means I can take them with me wherever I may be heading.

12. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

I’m loving all sorts at the moment. Set wise I’m loving Lutzenkirchen, Daniel Portman, Prok & Fitch, Filthy Rich and anything that has a solid, funky and tough groove! Non-dance music wise I am a big Stereophonics fan so I have that on when I’m chilling out.

13. Cats or Dogs?

Dogs definitely! I have been brought up with German Shepard’s I love them! Such intelligent, loyal and loving animals. Just don’t tell my Cat I said that.

14. What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

Years ago I had a random person in the DJ booth trying to scratch with the record that was actually playing! That was pretty annoying at the time, but funny to look back at it now. I am pretty sure he was turfed out soon after that!

15. What do you do in your time off?

If I’m at home and I’m not working in the studio I’m either watching football (I’m a West Ham fan so it’s not always much fun!) or drinking tea, I must drink over 10 cups a day. That’s really bad isn’t it?! I’m also a bit of a Jack The Ripper freak and love London history. I have to confess to going on a few ‘walks’ around Whitechapel, and it’s a good excuse to nip into the Ten Bells for a pint! If I’m out, then I’m probably enjoying a few beers and some food somewhere with my friends and family.

16. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

I don’t think I’ve ever had a strange gift, there was one girl last year at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza who had ‘Matt Smallwood Rocks!’ written on her back in luminous green paint, which was kind of a gift I suppose!

17. What would be your ultimate holiday?

My ultimate holiday would be The Maldives. White sand, crystal clear water, endless sunshine and cocktails on tap. Nice! Now where’s that lottery ticket?

18. What would you say is your best trait?

My best trait personally or as an artist? As an artist, my musical versatility is my best trait. I can play anything from tough house and progressive through tech house and into more techno based sounds. As I mentioned earlier, I think this is hugely important for any artist looking to make the grade.

19. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

I’m not sure it’s the home of dance music, probably the holiday of dance music! Regardless of how ‘cool’ it is to go there year after year, the fact remains that for a clubbing lifestyle Ibiza has it all. Masses of huge clubs, the biggest DJ’s on the Planet, decent weather and loads of party people who are up for it 24/7 and all the while that fact remains, it’ll continue to be the desired clubbing holiday hot-spot. Although someone needs to have a word about how expensive it is now!

20. Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

There’s been a few times when I may have had one shandy too many, but nothing too catastrophic!

Tim Andresen (What Happens, Professional Losers)

Considered the most influential man in Danish house music, Tim Andresen is now well established as a producer, remixer, promoter and label owner with truly international reach. He forms one half of Professional Losers signed to Norman Cook’s mighty Southern Fried imprint, Mark Knight’s Toolroom stable as one of the “Leaders Of The New School”.

Proving himself more professional than loser, Tim Andresen’s global reputation has continued to grow with solo work successfully released on the UK’s longest running house label Azuli, Distinctive, Suesse Records, Big In Ibiza, Fizzeek, Strawberry Blonde, 1980 Recordings, Fragile, Frosty Music, Nightology, Dumb Recordings, Jeepers Music and of course a whole string of releases and remixes on his own label What Happens.

Tim Andresen has had support from Pete Tong on The Essential Selection and further plays from the likes of Erick Morillo, Deep Dish, Hernan Cattaneo, Nic Fanciulli and dancemusic’s biggest superstar Fatboy Slim whom he was also asked to remix. Constantly showing his undeniable talent, his productions have climbed various charts reaching #1 in the UK Buzz Chart, and topped bestseller charts at leading download stores.

Looking back at the past years he won the Best DJ award at the Club Awards 2007, won the prestigious Most Popular Nordic DJ award (voted by the Scandinavian clubbers in 2007) and is now nominated for Best DJ for the 7th year running at the Danish DJ Awards making it a staggering 17 nominations overall in the 9 years history of the awards, proving his legendary contribution to the Danish nightlife over the last decade.

We caught up with Tim Andresen in one of his spare moments between gigs and the studio…

1. What are you working on at the moment?

A remix of Ran Shani’s “Classixx” out on Mirabilis soon.

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

Hopefully it steps up a gear or two and gets out of the global crisis.

3. What makes a good DJ?

Someone who’s dedicated, know the music, creative, technically gifted, able to play a clever set and good at connecting with the crowd.

4. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

“Sweep The Floor” from Joris Voorn springs to my mind.

5. What can we expect from you in the future?

I’ve got quite a few tracks done and I’m currently working on several unfinished bits and pieces besides that. The next release from my hand will be a track called “Crash Box” out on my own What Happens label in March. Also check out “Doobaba” out now.

6. How did you get into DJing?

Through a friend with a mobile disco back in the eighties.

7. Favourite gig you have ever played?

That’s a tough one… The obvious answer would be the Space terrace, Pacha or Privelegé, but one of the most memorable parties were in a carpark in Kazakhstan with a 4000-strong up-for-it crowd all dressed up for Halloween. That was something special! On the home ground my monthly Oven Ready nights at Vega stood out as legendary. Back then it was rated the best Friday night in the World by the likes of Mark Knight, Martijn Ten Velden and many more. Now we run our What Happens events with success at the excellent Culture Box in Copenhagen and those nights are well worth visiting if you’re around Copenhagen at some point.

8. Event of 2009?

Sundays at Ushuaia (Ibiza)

9. Twitter or Facebook?

Facebook

10. What is your most prized posession?

I’ll have to say my girlfriend…

11. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

Nic Fanciulli’s “Dusty House Room 3″ on Rejected, No Brainer’s “Resize EP” on Alive and there’s a few from Danny Serrano which are all fresh. Not to forget all the great new releases on What Happens of course. Speaking of No Brainer (now under his new Teva moniker), I can’t big up this guy enough… He is so talented!

12. Cats or Dogs?

Cat. Got one myself.

13. What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

I was quite surprised when a man came up trying to order drinks and not realizing it wasn’t the bar.

14. What do you do in your time off?

What time off? Well, on a more serious tip, I started in a gym this year. It takes up quite some time during the week but it’s been a wake up call after years of destroying my body. I’ll recommend it to everyone in the music industry.

15. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

A few… I once got the face from a rabbit costume that someone gave me while playing and it somehow ended up in my house afterwards.

16. What would be your ultimate holiday?

Sunny beaches, fantastic nature, great food, lots of fun and those I love around me.

17. What would you say is your best trait?

Dedicated and passionate about the things I do.

18. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

It is, yes. Although it doesn’t quite have the same influence it had back in the days. Having said that can we please get back to the days before restrictions took over the island?

19. Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

Once… Not giving you all the details though.

Ibiza Knights aka DJ Fubar and Christian Davies have had a magnificent 2009, unleashing their mammoth live show and gaining masses of support on their unique productions and original vocals. To launch 2010 the boys unleash 2 hot new remixes of their 2008 Ibiza anthem “(Feels So) Good To Be Alive” from Filthy Louca and Big In Ibiza.

With over 20 years experience in DJing, writing, producing, singing, events promotion, management and more DJ Fubar has been there, seen it, done it, rocked it and still continues to reek havoc on dancefloors worldwide with his insatiable appetite for pleasing crowds and entertaining. Now resident DJ, promoter and head of music for the UK’s biggest club, The Syndicate (Blackpool) Jason Fubar has found his calling playing to well over 10,000 clued up and up for it clubbers a week alongside some of this biggest DJs in the world including Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Mauro Picotto and more!

Other half of Ibiza Knights Christian came to the forefront in 2007 with residencies at Liquid in Wrexham and Honeyclub in Rhyl as well as producing for DJ Fubar, Des Mitchell (BCM, Bora Bora), DJ Kuta (N-Trance) and co-writing the theme music to American Idol with Bonsai music. Constantly DJing around the world and compiling BCM’s annual compilation series as well as producing under a host of monikers, Christian Davies is a talent here to stay.

We caught up with the guys before heading off to put the final touches to some killer new material for the new decade!

1. What are you working on at the moment?

Things are really hotting up on the production front with a few remixes and collaborations with Alex M.O.R.P.H & Chris Ortega, plus remixes of Temper Traps & Rank 1 due for release early 2010.

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

Everything seems to be going full circle at the moment, but it’s an exciting time for EDM as it doesn’t appear that clubs & events haven’t been hit too hard from the recession so we think more live aspects of artists will feature more in 2010.

3. What makes a good DJ?

Ability to read the crowd in front of you and not to have a game plan before hand as things can change very quickly and you must have the ability to adapt and keep up with moving trends.

4. What’s your favourite bit of kit, and how does it sit in your overall set-up?

Jason – im just getting to grips with Ableton Live, but ive started doing Old Skool Vinyl sets on Serato using the Vinyl option rather than CD and the Old Skool ravers love the fact that im using Turntables!

Christian – I’ve got so much! In the studio I love my Nord Lead 3 & Virus C (old school!) plus of course tons of plugins. Recently getting into Reaktor as well for some different and unusual sounds. DJing I’m a big fan of serato scratch live, with turntables and MIDI controller.

5. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

Jason:
Tune – Sidney Sampson – Riverside (hits the button every time !)
Influential Artist – Little Boots (Cos she’s from Blackpool….its been girl power returning this year !)

Christian:
I would have to agree with Jason, Riverside never fails! On the whole though I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one track or artist, there’s so much great new music around (who said dance music was dead??)

Christian Davies

6. What can we expect from you in the future?

More Live sets with us both in session together as we did this last week at Gatecrasher and went down amazing !!

7. How did you get into DJing?

Jason – Love of music and visiting clubs for the first time in 1988 and hearing “Steve Silk Hurley – Jack Your Body” !!

Christian – I have been DJing ever since school (I started doing the school discos at my school!) and writing and producing music even longer. Once I started working in nightclubs it was just a natural
progression into dance music and take it full time from there.

8. Favourite gig you have ever played?

Jason – Ibiza 1999 at Space on the terrace. Before the roof was added last year it was a magical place and one where you would see every dj on their nights off always on the dancefloor. Plus some 60 year old dude climbing the walls in a Spiderman outfit stuck in my head !!

Christian – I think it would have to be Gatecrasher @ The Syndicate, as not only was it a great night, it was a live showcase set of all our own music and remixes, and it really went off with the crowd.

9. Event of 2009?

Jason – There’s two for me…. Armin Van Buuren, Gareth Emery & Myself at The Syndicate, Blackpool, UK on May 3rd, just an amazing night & secondly the Ibiza Knights Debut “Live Dex n Efx” set at Gatecrasher in November 09

Christian – I was there with Jason @ the Armin night and it was immense, if a bit of a blur towards the end

10. Twitter or Facebook?

Jason – 100% Facebook, im addicted! (Having over 8000 fans & friends keeps me busy !!)

Christian – ooooooo… twitter…. (or facebook) can I have both?

11. What is your most prized possession?

Jason – My car !! got a tidy BMW X5 !!

Christian – my Mac!

12. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

Jason – Anything by the Swedes
Temper Traps – Sweet Disposition (Ibiza Knights Remix) (Obviously)
Sidney Sampson – Blackpool MoFo (a special Blackpool version done by Sidney Sampson for me !)
Bob Sinclar & Dirty South – The Russian March
Christian Davies – Touch My Heart (Stefano Noferini Remix) (well done Chris !)
Faithless – Sun To Me (Jerome Isma-ae Remix but also the Alex M.O.R.P.H. remix in Trance sets)
Fedde Le Grand – Praise You (Fatboy Slim vs. Fedde Le Grand Remix)
Wippenberg – Pong (Tocadisco Remix)
Anything by Riva Starr at the moment !

Christian -
Temper Traps – Ibiza knights remix – but Jason already got that one in!
Javi Mula – Come On
The Mitchell Project – Wanna See You Dance (Christian Davies Remix)
Whelan & Di Scala – Black Sensation
On my stereo now…. Mark Knight & D Ramierz – Downpipe
Sexy Bitch – Abel Ramos or Chuckie remix – always rocks!

13. Cats or Dogs?

Jason – defo Cats !
Christian – Cats

Jason Fubar

14. What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

Jason – Victoria Beckham walking into the DJ Box in BCM, Magaluf in 2000 cos I just thought the crowd were going mental for me, but she was stood behind me !! haha

Christian – Some girl taking all my clothes and not bringing them back until the end of the night… DJ’d the whole gig in my boxers!

15. What do you do in your time off?

Jason – Whats Time off ?? haha, Sleep, eat, play Golf, Football, Ski so plenty of holidays

Christian – Sleep. Sleep. Write music. Sleep. Eat curry.

16. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

Jason – yes a few weird paintings, but one guy had my logo tattooed on his arm which was a bit
bizarre !!

Christian – hmmm…. no

17. What would be your ultimate holiday?

Jason – Thailand in January when the UK clubs have shut up shop for the first 3 weeks, the Thai people come out to party and loads of A-List DJs are there chilling in the big resorts in Koh Samui, plus I lived there for a year and adore the place !!

Christian – Anywhere where I can take my mind off what remixes I should be doing, what gigs I’m missing, and who is gonna do this weeks radio show!

18. What would you say is your best trait?

Jason – im too generous for my own good !! Lets just say I wont be rich when I die !!

Christian – I guess I’m a good listener, which is always a bonus when you make music for a living

19. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

Jason – No I wouldn’t call it the home it’s just the best platform to showcase your music as clubbers have a different vibe there at the atmosphere is amazing at the clubs. When they go to Ibiza, they will listen & dance to pretty much anything !

Christian – Yeah I would agree, I find that Ibiza is one of those places the clubbers will dance to anything as long as its great music. It doesnt have to be something they can sing along with (and noone would DARE ask for christina – Dirrty lol)

20. Has it ever all gone completely wrong?

Jason – so far ive not been cursed with any bad luck, except for maybe a few fire alarms stopping the music every now and then, but I just get on the mic and start singing and the crowd respond accordingly. In 2000 there was a power cut at a gig at BCM in Magaluf and I had the crowd sat down on the dancefloor singing classic dance tunes for 45 minutes till the power was restored, a nice
moment !!

Christian – I had to evacuate 2000 people from a club half way through my set once – but it wasn’t my fault (honest!) Other than that, my laptop crashed once or twice, but I always have a CD backup so it wasn’t very exciting. Sorry

Nino Anthony first came to light on the scene back in 2006 as a producer by releasing tracks on his newly formed label, Portamento Records.

Since then Nino has released an abundance of original productions and remixes on some of the biggest labels in the world in including Big In Ibiza, Pacha Recordings, Ministry of Sound, Spinnin, Juicy Traxx, Resist, Defected and Vendetta among many others! His tracks and remixes have also been a massive part of his success, most recently for Big In Ibiza he remixed Jonathan Ulysses & Peter Brown’s “Time”, which you can listen to here.

Don’t forget we also have exclusive interviews with Jonathan Ulysses, Peter Brown, and many others!

1. What are you working on at the moment?

Well lately, I have been busy working on remixes more so then original tracks. I just remixed a track for Nick Waters. I also just finished up a remix for Seamus Haji v Dino Psaras feat Rudi titled “My Destiny” that will be out on Seamus’ Big Love Imprint . On the original production front, Phunk (1/2 of Granite & Phunk) and I are collaborating on a massive piano anthem (we hope) called “Pianoism”. We are shooting for a release in February or March around WMC time. So yeah, just staying really busy.

2. Where do you see dance music going in 2010?

I think it’s going to continue to progress further, and also continue to get bigger and reach a bigger wider variety of audiences. I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing, the bigger it gets, like a lot of people do. As long as it keeps it’s vibe and doesn’t go total cheese/mainstream, it will remain the freshest and best music out there.

3. What makes a good DJ?

Charisma, mixing skills, track selection, and most importantly they have to look like they are feeling the music and not just up there playing music because someone booked them.

4. What’s your favourite bit of kit, and how does it sit in your overall set-up?

Well, for a while it was my Future Retro Revolution, but it’s been broke for over a year. Lately, I’ve really been getting the most out of Reason and really focusing on pulling unique sounds out of it. Reason has some really other worldly sounds, so it’s just a matter of tweakin with them and making them groove and dance-floor friendly.

5. Tune of 2009/Most influential artist of 2009?

Wow, so tough to pick 1 tune…I would probably have to say “Leave the World Behind”. You couldn’t go anywhere and not here it. It was an amazing collaboration of minds and the result turned out to be a MASSIVE tune, and in my opinion, the biggest tune of 09.

6. What can we expect from you in the future?

As far as productions, I’m definitely getting more into the deeper/tribal vibe of things, but still keeping it peak hour. As far as djing, hopefully big things and much more traveling in 2010. 2009 was spent mostly in my studio, so I’m ready to get out and travel and experience different places, different cultures, different experiences. I just signed on with APO artist management, so I am expecting big things for 2010.

7. How did you get into DJing?

To make a long story short…my brother and I went to University together, and he was the dj at a local bar. He wanted to switch to bartender to make more $, and asked me if I wanted to take over. I had no idea what the hell I was doing, so I just played 1 song after another with no blends. From there, it just progressed and I got into house music and the rest is history. So I have my older brother to thank for giving me my first gig.

8. Favourite gig you have ever played?

Cervantes Masterpiece ballroom in Denver Colorado. Great venue, really underground, great people, great city.

9. Event of 2009?

That I witnessed—Erick Morillo @ Spybar Chicago, and Roger Sanchez @ Crobar Chicago…BOTH PLAYED AMAZING SETS!

10. Twitter or Facebook?

Well, I still prefer myspace actually, just b/c the music aspect of myspace. Facebook is nice for keeping in touch with people, and I just recently got on twitter. I’m starting to like it more and more.

11. What is your most prized posession?

My health…but in the materialistic world…my home studio.

12. What tunes are on your playlist at the moment?

There is so much good music out right now, it’s almost impossible to pick a few. But I suppose my Top5 (in no order) would be…

1. Nino Anthony “Why Can’t We See? (Groovenatics Remix)
2. Dirty South “We Are” ft. Rudy (Alex Gaudino & Jason Rooney Remix
3. Mijangos “Bahia” ft. Café de Sol (Erich Ensastigue Pure Jaus Rremix)
4. Sidney Samson & Tony Cha Cha “Emporium” (Original Mix)
5. The Face, Adam Shaw, Mark Brown “Needin U” (Norman Doray Remix)

13. Cats or Dogs?

Haha, the question of all questions…I started out growing up with dogs, but my ex-girlfriend bought me a cat years ago, and now I have 2 and I would definitely consider myself a cat person now. They are not as needy as dogs and way easier to take care of.

14. What is the weirdest experience you’ve ever had behind the decks?

I haven’t had any weird experiences behind the decks to date, but the worst experience I have had as a dj, is being held in immigration in the UK b/c I didn’t have the correct working documents that were apparentely necessary in order to play. I ended up staying in immigration holding overnight and forced to fly all the way back to the states the next morning. Not a pleasant experience to say the least!

15. What do you do in your time off?

What time off I rarely seem to get a break, but outside of music, I hit the gym as much as possible, and just like chillin out watching t.v. or reading.

16. Have you ever received strange gifts from fans?

No, not yet.

17. What would be your ultimate holiday?

Anywhere that has warm weather, sun, beautiful beaches, beautiful women, great clubs and great music!

18. What would you say is your best trait?

My work ethic.

19. Is Ibiza still the home of dance music?

I can’t really say as I haven’t had an opportunity to make it over to the white isle yet  Hopefully summer of 2010, I’ll get a chance to check out the madness that is Ibiza.
